West Shore
The West shore is among the oldest of Lake Tahoe’s vacation areas and home to resorts like Sunnyside, Tahoe Pines, Homewood, Chamber’s Landing, Sugar Pine Point, and Meek’s Bay. Residents enjoy 16 miles of Lake Tahoe shore line, thickly wooded neighborhoods tucked up against mountains and wilderness, campgrounds, picnic areas and pebbled beaches. There are Marinas for water activity, alpine skiing at Homewood and Granlibakken. Popular Sunnyside Resort and Lodge, 1 ½ miles south of Tahoe City, offers lush accommodations and great dining with one of the largest Lakefront decks on Lake Tahoe. Blackwood Canyon lies west of Highway 89 where miles of groomed cross country trails are available through the areas State Parks and National Forest lands along with hiking trails in the summer and 10 miles of paved bike trail alongside Highway 89. Opposite of Tahoe Pines is Fleur du Lac, a 15 acre private lakefront community with 22 condominiums, a private marina, tennis, pool and fitness center. Homewood Mountain Resort is the closest ski area to Lake Tahoe, offering alpine skiers and snowboarders over 2,000 acres of terrain. Visit Chambers Landing where you will find sandy beaches and a historic bar and pier and Tahoma for quintessential Old Tahoe site seeing. Sugar Pine Park is nearly 2,000 acres of state park with year round recreational activities, historic mansions, and two miles of forested lake frontage. At the southwest corner is Desolation Wilderness. This beautiful park welcomes campers in the summer and cross country skiers in the winter. Meeks Bay is the most popular lakefront campground resorts with a marina, beach, bike rentals, gift shop and historic cabins. Just south is beautiful Emerald Bay with its glacier carved granite and the historic Vikingsholm castle. You can visit the castle via a walking trail from the parking lot on Highway 89.
